Cutting the Dendrogram through Permutation Tests
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper introduces an innovative approach for detecting a suboptimal partition starting from the dendrogram produced by a hierarchical clustering techinique. The approach exploits permutation tests and it can be used regardless of the agglomeration method and distance measure used in the classification process because it relies on the same criteria used for producing it. Moreover, the proposed approach can detect partitions not necessarily identifiable using a traditional cut approach, as the resulting clusters could correspond to different heights of the tree.

The Experimental and Numerical Study of Hexagonal Cutting Of AISI 316L Steel Round Bars
Cutting processes can be used in batch production of polygonal bars with special features. In this paper, a new form of broaching process for cutting of hexagonal bars from raw round bars is discussed. Due to lack of rolled or drawn raw material, the final product is made of AISI 316L stainless steel bars having appropriate initial size. In this method, a fixed die is used as a tool, and by app...
متن کاملA review on laboratory tests’ utilization: A trigger for cutting costs and quality improvement in health care settings
Background: Considering the role of laboratory tests as a central part of controlling health expenditure, this study intends to investigate laboratory tests overutilization in Iran to pave the way for future interventions. Methods: Inappropriate laboratory utilization was reviewed in a cross-sectional survey through the retrospective analysis of 384 medical records at a tertiary cente...
متن کاملDefining clusters from a hierarchical cluster tree: the Dynamic Tree Cut package for R
SUMMARY Hierarchical clustering is a widely used method for detecting clusters in genomic data. Clusters are defined by cutting branches off the dendrogram. A common but inflexible method uses a constant height cutoff value; this method exhibits suboptimal performance on complicated dendrograms. We present the Dynamic Tree Cut R package that implements novel dynamic branch cutting methods for d...
متن کاملDynamic Tree Cut: in-depth description, tests and applications
In hierarchical clustering, clusters are defined as branches of a cluster tree. The constant height branch cut, a commonly used method to identify branches of a cluster tree, is not ideal for cluster identification in complicated dendrograms. We describe a new dynamic branch cutting approach for detecting clusters in a cluster tree based on their shape. Compared to the constant height cutoff, o...
متن کاملIndependent contrasts and regression through the origin.
Following the pioneering work of Felsenstein and Garland, phylogeneticists have been using regression through the origin to analyze comparative data using independent contrasts. The reason why regression through the origin must be used with such data was revisited. The demonstration led to the formulation of a permutation test for the coefficient of determination and the regression coefficient ...
